TLDR: Parque Arví is a 16,000-hectare forest reserve above Medellín, only reachable by Metrocable. The cable car ride is as good as the park. Go on a weekday, bring layers, and allow at least half a day.

Most visitors come to Medellín for the city, but the mountains above it are part of what makes Medellín extraordinary. Parque Arví sits in the cloud forests of Santa Elena, directly above the valley, and the only way to reach it is by the Metrocable. That journey, combined with what you find when you arrive, makes this one of the best half-day experiences the region offers.

Getting There: The Metrocable Journey

Start at any Metro station and ride to Acevedo, at the northern end of Line A. From Acevedo, board Metrocable Line K, which climbs through the densely packed hillside comunas. The cable floats above narrow streets, rooftop terraces, and a cityscape that drops away below you as the altitude rises. At Santo Domingo station, transfer to Line L, the Arví cable. This leg takes approximately 20 minutes and passes through a dramatic transition, from urban hillside to cloud forest canopy. The green replaces the city almost suddenly.

Line L Ticket Cost

The Arví cable (Line L) requires a separate ticket purchased at Santo Domingo station: approximately COP 24,500 per person (around USD 6.50), in addition to your standard Metro fare. Keep your Metro card with credit for the return journey.

The Park

Parque Arví covers over 16,000 hectares of Andean cloud forest in the municipality of Santa Elena. The park has over 54 km of marked trails ranging from flat, easy walks to longer hikes. The air is cooler and cleaner than downtown, and the sound changes completely from city noise to birds and wind.

Activities include guided nature walks, birdwatching from two observation towers (5 and 9 meters high, guides required), cycling and mountain biking on designated trails, horseback riding, and picnicking in meadow areas. On Saturdays and Sundays, a small artisan and farmers’ market operates near the cable station, selling local produce, crafts, and food.

Trails and Navigation

The main trails are well-marked from the cable station. A short loop near the station takes about 45 minutes. Longer trails require more time and ideally a guide, as the park is large enough to get genuinely turned around in. Guides are available near the Arví cable exit. The park provides maps at the entrance point.

Practical Details

Opening hours: Tuesday through Sunday, 9am to 6pm. The park is closed on Mondays, except when Monday is a public holiday (the following Tuesday is then closed for maintenance instead). Arrive by 10am on weekends to avoid the late-morning rush on the cable car and to have the trails to yourselves for the first hour.

What to bring: A light jacket or layer because it is significantly cooler than the valley, water and snacks (food options inside are limited to the weekend market), comfortable walking shoes, and a rain jacket if there is any chance of afternoon cloud cover.

Who It Suits

Parque Arví is a strong choice for nature lovers, hikers, bird enthusiasts, and families with children who can manage the walk. It is also a good option if you have been in the city for a few days and want a complete change of environment. The transition from dense urban valley to quiet forest in under an hour is one of Medellín’s most underused pleasures.

Picnic Logistics and Food at the Top

The Mercado Arvi runs on weekends near the cable station and stocks empanadas, trout, and artisanal cheeses from Santa Elena silleteros. Expect to pay COP 8,000 to 25,000 per item.

If you prefer a sit-down lunch, Pio Restaurante inside the park does farm-to-table trout mains around COP 48,000. Bring a layer: temperatures at 2,500 meters drop fast when clouds roll in.

Hiking Trails Inside the Park

Parque Arvi holds 54 kilometers of signposted trails across ecological reserves. The Camino de los Arrieros is a 3.5 km loop with minimal elevation, while the Camino Nuboso climbs into cloud forest and takes around two hours round trip.

Guided walks depart from the visitor center at 10am and 1pm on weekends for COP 15,000. Closed-toe shoes are required after rain.

Closing Time Reality

The Metrocable line L stops running up from Santo Domingo around 5pm on weekdays and 6pm on weekends. Aim to be at the Arvi station boarding queue at least 45 minutes before that cutoff.
